Minke Whales

Description

I have an art project due in 36 hours that I have barely started *sobs* that's what these little dudes are for, actually!

The project is this "shadow box" thing, which is basically a wooden box that has a little hole in the side that you look into and a larger hole on the top to let light in. Our assignment is to make a scene in the box in such a way that, when you look into the hole on the side, the scene looks wayyyy bigger than what is possible, considering the box is only slightly larger than a shoe box

Earlier this week, I got the idea to cover the hole on the top with blue paper to make the inside of the box look like an underwater scene (which I haven't actually started yet ^^;) I knew I would need some sort of animal/monster/creature of some kind to go in the box to make it look like you're looking into a really big space. I was going to do a dragon or a sea serpent at first, but that pipe-cleaner dragon I posted a few months (weeks?) ago was for the same class and I didn't want to do two dragon projects in the same semester :grump: Then I thought of doing a whale, because they're obviously pretty big. Ironically, the species of whale I ended up choosing for this assignment was the minke whale, which is the smallest whale species! =P

I don't know exactly what shade of blue I'll be using for the interior of the box yet, so I decided to mess around with the colors to come up with four different options. I'll pick whichever one matches the closest when I actually get around to painting things XD

I have some leftover balsa wood from our last art project that I WAS just going to throw away, but I think I'm going to glue the whales onto the wood to make the paper more sturdy. Yay recycling!

Ugggghhh, as much as I'm going to be stressing out tomorrow trying to finish this project by Wednesday morning, I'm actually really excited about it :) This entire class has pretty much been sculpture-based and I can honestly say that I haven't enjoyed any of our projects at all this semester. This is the only one that I'm actually looking forward to putting together. I hope it turns out okay :P

If I can get a picture of everything once it's in the box, I'll try and post one on here. I can't make any promises though because of the weird space we have to construct this thing in...

Enjoy!
